Decadal Changes in Greenland Ice Sheet Firn Aquifers from Radar Scatterometer

چکیده
Surface meltwater runoff is believed to be the main cause of alarming mass loss in Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS); however, recent research has shown that a large amount not directly drained or refrozen but stored form firn aquifers (FAs) interior GrIS. Monitoring changes FAs over GrIS great importance evaluate stability and balance ice sheet. This challenging because are visible on surface direct measurements lacking. A new method proposed map during 2010–2020 period by using C-band Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) data based Random Forests classification algorithm with aid from NASA Operation IceBridge (OIB) program. Melt days (MD), melt intensity (MI), winter mean backscatter (WM) parameters derived ASCAT used as input vectors for algorithm. The accuracy model assessed ten-fold cross-validation, overall Kappa coefficient 97.49% 0.72 respectively. results show reached maximum 2015, accumulative area 2010 2020 56,477 km2, which 3.3% area. study provides way investigate long-term dynamics have significance understanding state subsurface subglacial hydrological systems.

Changes in the firn structure of the western Greenland Ice Sheet caused by recent warming
Atmospheric warming over the Greenland Ice Sheet during the last 2 decades has increased the amount of surface meltwater production, resulting in the migration of melt and percolation regimes to higher altitudes and an increase in the amount of ice content from refrozen meltwater found in the firn above the superimposed ice zone. Here we present field and airborne radar observations of buried i...

متن کاملExtraction of Ice Sheet Layers from Two Intersected Radar Echograms near Neem Ice Core in Greenland
Accumulation of snow and ice over time result in ice sheet layers. These can be remotely sensed where there is a contrast in electromagnetic properties, which reflect variations of the ice density, acidity and fabric orientation. Internal ice layers are assumed to be isochronous, deep beneath the ice surface, and parallel to the direction of ice flow. The distribution of internal layers is rela...
متن کاملGeoradar-derived estimates of firn density in the percolation zone, western Greenland ice sheet
[1] Greater understanding of variations in firn densification is needed to distinguish between dynamic and melt-driven elevation changes on the Greenland ice sheet. This is especially true in Greenland’s percolation zone, where firn density profiles are poorly documented because few ice cores are extracted in regions with surface melt. We used georadar to investigate firn density variations wit...
متن کاملChanges in the velocity structure of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Using satellite radar interferometry observations of Greenland, we detected widespread glacier acceleration below 66 degrees north between 1996 and 2000, which rapidly expanded to 70 degrees north in 2005. Accelerated ice discharge in the west and particularly in the east doubled the ice sheet mass deficit in the last decade from 90 to 220 cubic kilometers per year. As more glaciers accelerate ...
